Sell Your Foreign and World Coins in Southern Oregon
We specialize in foreign coins. Most of the collectible world coins on the market will be from the 1950s and earlier, there are some exceptions. If you have coins from around the world bring them in for an evaluation. Most coins we purchase come from England, Canada, Germany, Russia, and Mexico, but we do purchase and specialize in coins from almost every country in the world.
J. Austin & Company is a coin and gold dealer in Southern Oregon. World gold and world silver coins are part of what we buy, as single coins or whole accumulations.
How We Sort a Pile of Foreign Coins
Foreign coins usually arrive mixed: a tin of travel change, a folder of Mexican pesos, some British silver from a grandparent, a gold piece from an estate. We buy single coins and whole accumulations, and sort them at the table into four groups, each valued its own way.
- Silver coins. Before about 1965, most countries struck everyday coins in real silver: European silver from before World War I, Canadian silver through 1967, Mexican pesos into the late 1960s. Common dates are bought on silver content.
- Gold coins. British sovereigns, French 20-franc pieces, Mexican gold pesos, Swiss and German gold. Common dates go on gold content; scarcer pieces are judged one by one.
- Modern world bullion. Maple Leafs, Krugerrands and Libertads are bought as bullion: live spot minus a small spread. See how we price.
- Collector pieces. Colonial-era Mexican reales, Spanish-colonial pieces from Peru and Bolivia, pre-1900 Chinese cash coins and shogun-era Japanese silver have their own collector markets.
Modern base-metal coins, such as euros, have little or no collector value; we’ll tell you which to take home.
What changes what we can offer
- Metal content. It varies by country and year, so we weigh and sort by series.
- Date, mint and variety. The same coin from two different mints can differ widely in value.
- Condition. A cleaned or polished coin loses its collector premium and is bought on metal only, so please leave coins as they are.
- Graded coins. Coins sealed in PCGS or NGC holders we can discuss by grade over the phone. Loose coins we need to see.
Your appointment
Both shops see sellers by appointment and are usually booked, so call ahead: Ashland at (541) 482-3715 (1632 Ashland St., Tuesday to Friday, 10 am to 5 pm) or Grants Pass at (541) 955-2985 (typically Mondays). Bring everything unsorted, any grading paperwork, foreign paper money (we buy some of that too) and a photo ID. There’s no extra charge for evaluating more coins.

Medford has no J. Austin shop, so Medford sellers come to Ashland, about 14 miles away. Grants Pass and Roseburg sellers can book the Grants Pass shop, and Redding sellers regularly make the I-5 drive to Ashland. See selling in Grants Pass.
