Military items we buy

We buy historical militaria: medals and decorations, insignia, uniforms, edged weapons such as knives, military documents, and portraits from the Civil War era and earlier. A single medal is worth a call, and so is a box of military items from an estate.

What do we look at when we evaluate militaria?

Militaria is collected for its history, so what we can offer depends on rarity, condition and current demand. A few things matter in particular.

• Keep groups together. If several items came from one person, such as medals, a uniform, photographs, letters or service papers, bring them as a group. The papers and photographs are part of what we look at, not extras.
• Don’t clean anything. Don’t polish medals, sharpen or clean blades, or wash a uniform. Original finish and wear are part of the piece, and cleaning can’t be reversed.
• Markings. Names, numbers, engraving and maker’s marks help identify what an item is and where it came from. Leave tags, ribbons and labels attached.
• Condition. Moth damage, rust, missing parts and later repairs all count, which is why we need to see items in person.

If you’d like a sense of the market before you call, look at eBay’s sold listings for the same item, not the active ones. Active listings show what sellers are asking, not what items sold for.

How do I set up a time?

Call either shop. Ashland is at 1632 Ashland St., (541) 482-3715, with posted hours Tuesday through Friday, 10 to 5, by appointment; we’re usually booked and can’t promise time to walk-ins. Grants Pass is by appointment, typically Mondays, at (541) 955-2985. Bring everything in the group, plus any documents that go with it. There’s no charge for the evaluation and no obligation to sell.

Coming from Grants Pass, Medford or out of the area

Grants Pass sellers have their own shop. There’s no shop in Medford: Medford sellers book Ashland, about 14 miles away, and Phoenix is about 6 miles from the Ashland shop.
