If you have a Rolex, a Patek Philippe or a high-end Omega you’re ready to part with, you can sell it here in Southern Oregon without listing it online or meeting a stranger. J. Austin Brokers has been buying gold, silver, coins and jewelry in the Rogue Valley since 1997, and luxury watches are part of what we buy. We look at your watch with you, privately and by appointment, at our Ashland shop or in Grants Pass, explain what we see, and make you an offer.

The watches we buy

We buy three brands of watch: Rolex, Patek Philippe and high-end Omega. These are the models we look for:

  • Rolex: Submariner, GMT-Master, Daytona, Datejust, Day-Date, Sky-Dweller and Yacht-Master.
  • Patek Philippe: Calatrava, Nautilus, Aquanaut and the Complications.
  • Omega: Speedmaster Professional, Seamaster Professional 300m, Constellation, and De Ville models in precious metal.

If your Rolex isn’t on that list, call and tell us what it is. Other watch brands are a different matter: we may not buy them at all. If your watch is from another maker, please call before you bring it in, so you don’t make the drive for nothing.

What makes a watch worth more or less to us

A Rolex is not priced like scrap gold. Even in a solid-gold case, the gold is usually a small part of what the watch is worth; most of the value is in the watch itself. These are the things that move our offer up or down:

  • Reference and serial numbers. The reference number, engraved between the lugs, is what we work from. It tells us which model and version you have, and two references in the same model family can differ a great deal in value. We check the reference and serial numbers against known production data.
  • Condition. Wear from everyday use is expected and does not rule out a sale. Heavy polishing does more harm than honest wear, because it softens the edges of the case and rounds off the lugs. We also look at the dial, the bezel insert and how much the bracelet has stretched.
  • Original parts. A replacement dial, a swapped bezel, service hands or an aftermarket bracelet usually lowers the offer. The original bracelet adds value, and so do extra bracelet links and an original buckle.
  • Box and papers. The original box, the warranty card, the manual and the purchase receipt all add value. Papers whose numbers match the watch also help confirm that it is what it says it is.
  • Service history. Service records add value. Missing records don’t stop a sale.

At the appointment we tell you which of these raised our offer and which lowered it, so you see the reasoning and not only the result. For most watches we can’t give a number over the phone or from photos, because condition, originality and authenticity can only be judged with the watch in hand.

Leave the watch as it is. Please don’t have it polished, serviced or fitted with new parts before you come in. A service right before a sale usually costs the seller more than it adds, and we take any work the watch needs into account in our offer. A watch that has stopped running is still worth bringing in.

How we look at your watch

We do the evaluation in front of you, in a private appointment. We test the movement and authenticate the case and dial. In practice that means:

  • opening the caseback and checking the movement against published references;
  • checking the reference and serial numbers;
  • looking closely at the printing and markers on the dial, where copies usually show small mistakes;
  • checking the case finishing and the fit of the bracelet, clasp and end links;
  • checking that the crystal, hands and crown are right for that reference and year.

Copies of luxury watches are now made carefully enough to pass a quick look, which is why we check every watch in person before we talk about an offer. When we’re done, we tell you what we found and make you an offer. Whether to sell is your decision.

Selling it yourself, or selling to a local buyer

Some owners sell a watch themselves through an online listing or a marketplace app. That can work. It also means you take on jobs that a buyer would otherwise handle:

  • Meeting someone you don’t know. You either carry an expensive watch to meet a person you only know from messages, or you invite that person to you.
  • Checking the payment. Cash has to be checked on the spot, and some other ways of paying can be disputed or reversed after the buyer has left with the watch.
  • Proving the watch is genuine. A careful private buyer will want the watch authenticated, and a wary one may offer less to cover the risk of a copy.
  • A record online. Selling online can leave a lasting digital record of your name, your address and exactly which watch you sold.

Selling to us happens in a private appointment at our shop. We do the authentication ourselves and explain our offer. An in-person sale creates only the record that Oregon law requires for the sale itself. J. Austin & Company has been in the Rogue Valley since 1997, so if anything about a sale needs to be revisited later, we’re a phone call and a short drive away.

Coming from Medford or Grants Pass

From Medford: we don’t have a shop in Medford. Medford sellers come to our Ashland shop at 1632 Ashland St., about 14 miles away. The Ashland shop’s posted hours are Tuesday to Friday, 10 am to 5 pm, by appointment, so call (541) 482-3715 before you set out. See selling from Medford for more.

From Grants Pass: our Grants Pass shop works by appointment, typically on Mondays. Call (541) 955-2985 to set a time. See selling in Grants Pass, or compare both locations.

Both shops are usually booked, so we can’t promise time to anyone who arrives without an appointment, even during posted hours. You can also ask for a time through our contact page. Bring the watch as you’ve been wearing it, any box, papers, receipts and service records, any extra bracelet links, and a photo ID.

If you can’t come in

Call us at (541) 482-3715. Sellers who can’t make the trip usually start with that call: we talk through what you have, and if shipping it makes sense, we can send you a shipping label. We’ll go over insurance, payment and what happens once the watch reaches us on that call. Please call before you send anything. Read how selling by mail works.

Common questions

Do I need the box and papers to sell my Rolex?
No. We buy watches with or without them. If you have the original box, warranty card, manual, receipt or service records, bring them: they add value, and papers with numbers that match the watch help confirm it is genuine. If you don't have them, bring the watch anyway and we'll judge it on its own merits.
Can I sell a Rolex that needs service or doesn't run?
Yes. A watch that has stopped or needs service is still worth bringing in. Please don't have it serviced first: a service right before a sale usually costs the seller more than it adds, and we take any work the watch needs into account in our offer. Bring any service records you have.
Do you buy Rolex watches from Medford?
Yes. We have no shop in Medford, so Medford sellers bring their watches to our Ashland shop at 1632 Ashland St., about 14 miles away. The Ashland shop works by appointment, with posted hours of Tuesday to Friday, 10 am to 5 pm; call (541) 482-3715 to book. If Grants Pass suits you better, that shop sees sellers by appointment, typically on Mondays.
Can I mail my watch instead of coming in?
Call us first at (541) 482-3715. Sellers who can't come in usually start with that call: we talk through what you have, and if shipping it makes sense, we can send you a shipping label. We'll go over insurance, payment and the other details on the same call. Please don't send a watch before we've talked.
Do you buy watch brands other than Rolex?
We buy Patek Philippe and high-end Omega as well as Rolex. For Omega, that means models such as the Speedmaster Professional, Seamaster Professional 300m, Constellation and precious-metal De Ville. We may not buy other brands at all, so call (541) 482-3715 and tell us what you have before you make the trip.
How do I make an appointment?
Call the shop you want to visit: Ashland at (541) 482-3715, or Grants Pass at (541) 955-2985. You can also send a request through our contact page. Both shops work by appointment and are usually booked, so we can't promise time to walk-ins, even during posted hours. Grants Pass appointments are typically on Mondays.
