What We Pay for Scrap Gold
Scrap gold is priced on the gold actually in the piece — karat purity × weight × the live spot price on the day you sell. We pay up to 90% of spot on the gold content for larger quantities, generally lots over 10 troy ounces of gold.
That percentage applies to the gold in the item, not its gross weight: 14k is 58.3% gold and 10k is 41.7%, so we weigh the piece, test the karat, and work from what’s actually there. We do it in front of you and show you the arithmetic before you decide — nothing leaves the counter, and there’s no obligation to sell.

Why the size of the lot matters
Scrap prices below bullion because it has to be assayed (tested for its exact purity) and refined before it’s metal again, and that cost doesn’t shrink with a small lot. So the published rate at the top of this page is a ceiling for larger lots, not a flat rate. For a smaller lot, what we can pay depends on the gold content and the size of the lot, and we show you the arithmetic before you decide. Scrap rates follow the lot, not the seller.
Is it all scrap?
Not always. Before anything is priced as melt, we check whether it is worth more whole:
- Signed designer jewelry can be worth more intact than melted. Don’t cut anything up to make it “scrap.”
- Old US gold coins carry collector value on top of the gold — see US coins.
- Luxury watches get their own evaluation, where boxes, papers and service records count — see luxury watches.
- Stones are looked at separately from the metal. Leave them in their settings.
Gold-filled and plated pieces (marked GF, RGP, HGE, GP or EP) are not solid gold. Gold-filled we buy in bulk quantities; plated pieces recover very little.
Bars, rounds and bullion coins
Bars, rounds and common government coinage are bought at live spot minus a small spread — the gap between the market price and our offer — typically in the 3–5% range; how our pricing works explains why. Bring original packaging and assay cards if you still have them, and don’t break a sealed assay card. Selling a large amount? Call ahead and we can lock a price before your visit.
Placer gold is a separate conversation
Nuggets, flakes and dust have their own page. Call first: we don’t price placer gold over the phone or by chat.
Booking a time
Call before you drive in; both shops see sellers by appointment and are usually booked. The Ashland shop is at 1632 Ashland St., open Tuesday through Friday, 10am to 5pm — (541) 482-3715. We don’t have a Medford shop, so Medford sellers come to Ashland, about 14 miles away. The Grants Pass shop sees sellers by appointment, typically on Mondays — (541) 955-2985. Bring every piece that might be gold, uncut and uncleaned, along with a photo ID; Oregon requires one for precious-metals sales.
