What we buy, and what we look at first
We buy gold jewelry of any karat, and silver jewelry too: rings, wedding bands, chains, bracelets, earrings, pendants and class rings, along with broken chains, single earrings and snapped clasps. Native American pieces and fine watches have their own pages: Native American jewelry and luxury watches.
What changes the offer on a piece of jewelry
Jewelry is not priced like bullion. The starting point is the metal — purity × weight × the live spot price at your appointment — and then we account for what the piece actually is:
- Solid, filled or plated. This comes first, because plated and gold-filled pieces are priced on a different scale entirely from solid gold. A karat or fineness mark is the usual clue, but some older pieces carry no mark and are still real gold, so we test anything unmarked rather than guess.
- Maker. A signed designer piece can be worth more intact than melted. Bring it whole, and leave the signature and maker’s stamp alone.
- Stones. We look at the metal and the stones separately. Please don’t pry stones out of their settings first.
- Condition. Wear and damage count too. Two rings with the same gold content can deserve very different offers, which is why we look at every piece in person.
How the appointment works
A typical pile of jewelry takes 15 to 20 minutes. We weigh and test each piece in front of you, show you the arithmetic, and make an offer. There is no fee for the evaluation, and you are free to accept, decline, or think it over.
What to bring: everything that might be gold or silver, as it is — don’t cut, polish or repair anything first. Receipts, appraisals and diamond grading reports help but aren’t required. Oregon requires a photo ID for precious-metals sales, so please bring one.
